If you can only visit one Caribbean island, I think it should be Turks & Caicos. Turks is one of the few islands that actually has gorgeous, white beaches, clear aquamarine water. In other words, it's the real deal.

The 40 island nation is located just east of Hispaniola in the Atlantic Ocean.

#107 - The Annapurna Circuit

Imagine trekking through the Himalayas, visiting remote villages, as you ascend to a peak of 18,000 feet. That is the highlight of the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. It's a 20 day trek taken by the adventurous, including a climb on Mt. Annapurna, the 10th highest mountain in the world.

The trek is rigourous; hiking at high altitudes, shortage of oxygen, its' cold...simple and modest accomodations in Nepali guesthouses...but there's no question, the view is worth it. Am I right Binaya?

Cheryll from Suriname found this project and sent me this pretty view of the Jaw Jaw Sula (rapids) in the Suriname River. It's a a small country in South America, north of Brazil in case you're curious...

Cheryl tells me that 80% of the country is covered in rainforest; move over Costa Rica!

Here's another surprising fact; even though we associate Suriname as being in Latino land, it's official language is Dutch. Nuts!

#105 - I'll raise you an island!

I have the greatest friends. Christina was heading to the Faroe Islands and immediately sent me a card for the project. Thanks darling! Happy to say, there goes another $5 from my wallet!

The Faroe Islands used to belong to the Norweigans but centuries ago, the King lost the territory in a drunken game of poker to the King of Denmark. (If only all territorial disputes could be resolved that way, eh?)

You can also find one of the worlds smallest capitals here, the city of Torshavn. It's beautiful really, with all the multi-colored buildings, all of different shapes and sizes. Apparently people here really take ownership to heart and they display that through personalized colours on their homes.

I'd paint mine turquoise, dark black roof. You?

#104 - Where in the world is Tinian?

Tinian is part of a 15 island group that makes up the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The name might be familiar; just east of the islands you can find the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the worlds oceans.

Tinian also played a huge role during World War II. The US took over the island, and used it as a base to attack the Japanese mainland. In fact, the planes that dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? They were flown from Tinian.

Interesting eh?

To be honest, I was feeling kinda blah today. I don't know why, maybe it's because I ran out of Nestle Quik last night. I haven't had a single glass of chocolate milk in the last...16 hours. Trupti without chocolate milk is like a sunflower without sunshine.

But you know what cheered me right up? Another person out there in the world, strolling around in cyberspace, found my blog and decided to send me a postcard for this project. *big smiles*

Yanireth from Panama sent me this view of the La Vieja ruins near Panama City. It was built in 1519 which marked the arrival of the very first Spaniards on the Pacific Coast. From here, they planned and developed strategic attacks on the Incas. Amazing piece of history ain't it? Thanks Yanireth!

And now I'm off to get my chocolate milk!

#102 - Under the Shade I Flourish....

..is the the official motto of Belize. Naturally one imagines sitting under a palm tree, reading a book, having a drink...or two, or three. But in reality, the motto has very little do with relaxation. It refers to the shade of the mahogany tree which formed the basis of the Belizean economy in the 18th and 19th century. The nation was literally covered in these giant red trees until the British abused this natural resource which led to the depletion of mahogany in the 1930's. Today, the mahogany tree is on the conservation list in Belize. It's yet another reminder that we must protect our planet and avoid repeating mistakes made by our ancestors.

Kyrgyzstan. It looks like such an awkward assembly of letters to us English speakers, doesn't it? I wonder how many points you could gain by placing Kyrgyzstan on a scrabble board.....but anyway....

K-stan is a small mountainous country west of China. Beautiful landscapes and rolling hills. The nomadic Kyrgyz people also value horses; horseback riding and horse riding games are very popular here. Wonder if Christina saw any during her trip....

Ghana! WOW! What a surprise.

Charissa is an American student student currently studying in Ghana. Somehow she found my blog and decided to send a card for the project.

This my friends, is the current Ashantehere or chief of the Ashanti tribe, the largest ethnic group within Ghana. They are known for being fierce warriors and accumulating gold. : (Check out Mr. Tutu's collection!)

And you know what else I love about the Ashanti people? They live in a matrilineal society (say what?) which means the line of descent is traced through the FEMALE. Land rights, property and titles are also passed down through the females.

Clearly, one of the few intelligent societies on Earth ;)

Aside from the spectacular beaches, the sun, and the beautiful weather, Barbados lays claim to one of the oldest rum companies in the world; Mount Gay Rum was first produced in 1703.

Or the Green Lagoon in English, can be found in Chile. This salt lake sits 4300+ metres high and is well known for it's emerald green water and hot springs.

#98 - Rohtas Fort

This UNESCO site in Pakistan has got to be one of the most impressive forts in the world, not only for it's impressive architecture but sheer size as well.

The fort walls are about 4 km in circumference. You read that right. Four. Kilometres!

Even more more impressive, Salman tells me there's a village within the walls of the fort. I guess they're very well protected!

#97 - The First Card of 2010!

One of my goals this year is to complete this project; 97 countries down and only 166 more to go!
The first card of 2010 comes from Elie in Lebanon, with a view of The Grand Serail.
It's the headquarters of the Prime Minister of Lebanon. Built in 1853, it has 430 rooms.
One for every day of the year, and then some!

#96 - A Hondurian Hummingbird....

There are 42 different species of hummingbirds native to Honduras...This one is a Fork-Tailed Emerald Hummingbird.

I had the pleasure of seeing two in my backyard this summer. They move so fast that it took me a few seconds to realize what I saw! Hopefully I'll see more this summer, otherwise I'll just have to fly down to the Honduras to see some up close. Thanks to Ali's aunt for sending me this card :)

And I believe this is the last card for 2009. Here's hoping that I can get this project finished by the end of 2010. Thanks to everyone that's helped so far; we're saving one family, one postcard and one net at a time. Muchos gracias todos! Besos!

Le Le and YingYing are two panda bears gifted to Hong Kong by the Chinese government.

That's a pretty cool gift if you ask me. I wish China would give us some panda bears. I mean, look at them..they're cute and furry....and they got those little tiny ears....plus they're funny.

Costa Rica is known for many different things; coffee plantations, bananas, tropical rainforests, amazing biodiversity, volcanoes, black sand, pineapples..and a ton more...BUT

Costa Rica is one of the MOST impressive country in the world when it comes to environmental action. According to the Environmental Performance Index which evaluates a country's environmental policies & actions, Costa Rica sits 1st in the Americas (North and South) as the top Green nation. They're aiming to be the first country in the world to be carbon neutral by 2021.

The Costa Ricans seem to take their motto, "Pur Vida" or "Pure Life", very seriously. The rest of us could learn a thing or two from them.

The first card of November :) One of my eBay buyers followed the link to my blog and decided to send a card from Tajikistan. Maria is originally from Australia and moved to this Asian country about 10 years back.

Tajikistan is a landlocked country; China to the East, Afghanistan to the South, Uzebekistan to the West and Kyrgyzstan to the North. It's mostly a mountainous region as you can see here; mountains make up for 90% of this Republic.

Tajikistan is a developing country though with all these mountains, they should build some fancy ski resorts and get the tourists in there....

I tried to figure out which region this card is showing but considering the fact a) the back of the card has no description and b) 90% of the country is covered by mountains...I think I'm out of luck.

Camels are such funny creatures. They're somewhat ungraceful (have you ever seen a camel rise from its sitting/resting position? It's completely akward).

But you have to admit, they're silly and cute in their own way. Look at this guy smiling on the corner of the card; can't help but fall in love with that silly grin.

These camels are hanging out at Palmyra which was a key city in ancient Syria and is the location of many historic remains....Thanks Farah!

Welcome to Tunis, Tunisia! This is a typical market that you can find in many North African countries. Narrow, maze-like streets in high-walled compounds...

Feten says this type of market is every shoppers dream; a place to find one of a kind & unique handmade goods.

Look closely at the card; see those heart-shaped things? Baskets? Boxes? Anyone know what they are?

#90 - Mobile Tailor Boy

Here's a young man working as a mobile tailor in Nigeria. Abbas tells me they're common and that you see them all over Lagos State.

I love the idea; walk to work, grab a coffee and by the way...could you hem my pants?

Abbas used this funny stamp on the card; quite frankly I only thought that kinda thing happened in India!

Isn't the view stunning? Say hello to Stellenbosch, South Africa!

The city lies a the foot of the Cape Fold mountain range creating a climate which is ideal for growing grapes. The industry produces 1 billion litres of wine every year :

One of the best wines from this region is the Cabernet Sauvignon. I guess I have to make a trip to the liquor store to check it out for myself ;)

Jeannie from Papua New Guinea tells me there are 800 indigenous languages and 1000 different dialects in her country. In fact it has the highest number of languages in the world, more than any other country.

This island nation is one of the most diverse places in the whole world, linguistically, culturally and biologically. It's believed that dozens, maybe even hundreds of species remain undiscovered in the forests of this country. .

Alright, it's time to make our second donation! As of October 2nd, I have received 87 postcards.
In the first donation, I donated $325 for 67 postcards.

Let's do the math: 87 - 67 = 20; I received 20 postcards since my first donation. That means I have to donate: $5 x 20 = $100

Before Donation Total: $1032.34

After Donation Total: $1132.34

As of today, October 2, 2009, we have raised $435 for Nothing But Nets! YAHOOO! I have about 10 different postcards promised from various countries; I'm hoping by the end of October I have another $100 to donate.

#87 - Janitzio Island

Janitzio Island can be found in Lake Patzcuaro in the state of Michoacan; the area is famously known for its fishing industry. In the centre of the island you can see the statue of Jose Maria Marelos, a rebel who led the Mexican War of Independence.

Another Week...No Postcards :(

We've officially hit a brick wall. The postcards were flying in earlier this summer but now they are rare and slow...

I'm hoping that someone stumbles upon my blog from some random place or location and decides to send a card. Such as Matt in Trinidad; he just found my blog while surfing the internet and decided to send me a card.

Are there any more Matt's out there? I hope so!

All I know is that I can't give up and walk away now. As of today I have received 87 postcards. That's $435. That's 43 mosquito nets for 43 African families. We've already helped a small village! So we can't stop now, many more people to help.

For those of you wondering, I'll be making the second donation on September 30th, complete with proof of donation. Let's hope I get a few more cards to bump up the totals!

#86 - Guia Lighthouse

The Guia Fort in Macau consists of a chapel and lighthouse. The lighthouse was completed in 1865, making it the oldest lighthouse in the Far East.

If you look closely at the image, you might be able to see the Portuguese flag flying to the left of the ligthhouse; that's because they settled in this area sometime in the 16th century and maintained control of Macau until 1999.

Surf's up...in Africa? Yup! Cape Verde is an island country on the Western coast of the African continent.

Cape Verde was discovered and settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century and it wasn't until 1975 that the country acheived it's own independent status.

It was built by the Nabataeans around 100 BCE.

Petra is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but according to Sara, it's also one of the New Seven Wonders Of The World.

#83 - St. Stefan

St. Stefan or Sveti Stefan, is a beautiful island resort in Montenegro. It stands on the cliff of a rocky island with roofs red like rubies. A sand isthmus looking like a stem connects it with the land.

It used to be extremely exclusive, attracting celebrities (Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Boris Becker to name a few) until the breakup of of the former Yugoslav Federation.

#82 - Northern Coast of Trinidad

Like all other Caribbean islands, Trinidad is a gorgeous country with lush palm trees and beautiful beaches.

What sets Trinidad apart is their unique culture; the island consists mostly of people with ancestry in Africa and India. So you have this fusion of cultures which leads to some very awesome food if I must say. Speaking of food, I''m yearning for some good roti....

#81 - Sigiriya Rock

This massive rock can be found in Sri Lanka. Known as Sigiriya Rock, it is the site where a fortress was built in the 5th century AD.

The site has elaborate resevoirs, gardens and other features, including frescoes which are similiar to those found in the Ajanta caves in India. (Similiar style and theme).

This unique tourist attraction is also a World Heritage Site.

Woohoooooooooo! Card number 80 from Daniela! She took a spontaneous trip to Liechtenstein and sent me this gorgeous view of the Vaduz Castle in...where else? Vaduz!

The Vaduz Castle is home to the prince of Liechtenstein and the "Liechtenstein princely family". The current prince is Hans-Adam II.....his full name?

Johannes Adam Ferdinand Alois Josef Maria Marko d'Aviano. Imagine writing that on a postcard!

#79 - Unsko-sanski Region.....

As you can tell, the cards have slowed down but I'm still determined in my goals. My buddy Željko recently took a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina and sent me this card from Unsko-sanski. It's the most western part of the country and famed for ducks.

Actually I'm just kidding ;) I tried to find more information about the Unsko-sanski region in B&H, and luckily I found their tourist website...which was written in Bosnian...or maybe it was Croatian...or perhaps Serbian.

Regardless, the point is...I couldn't read it and so now I know just as much about Unsko-sanski as I did yesterday: zilch. Nada. Rien. Nothing.

So if you know something about this region in B&H, please feel free to post it in the comments section; you'll be more helpful than Google!

I met Richard on eBay; he's a funny guy with a huge personality. That was enough to like him but then I learned about his organzation, the Kennair Educational Foundation. Please check out his website; you will be inspired.

In short, their aim is to provide youth with educational and vocational skills; you know what they say, education is the key to success!

#77 - Marrakechian Medina

Woohoo! A card from Morocco; thanks Judita & Duson! Now, I know the card says "Medina" but the card is actually from Marrakech.

A medina is typically found in old French Arab cities; it's a walled area, narrow, and maze-like streets. They're generally well preserved with cultural monuments, mosques, and even palaces. Beautiful and brightly coloured, they're usually a huge tourist draw. I know I want to go there!

#76 - Diamond Falls & Botanical Gardens of....

St. Lucia! Thanks Shae! This tropical paradise can be found in the Caribbean, in the Lesser Antilles. Like many other Caribbean nations, it is a small very small island with a very small population (130,000).

What's fascinating to me? St. Lucia is home to TWO Nobel Laureates, therefore it can claim the distinction of being the nation with the most such honorees per capita in the world.

What are these people drinking?!

It shows all the wonderful cities and towns in Ireland including Limerick. I wonder if people from this town are talented poets....wouldn't it be cool to live in Limerick and have your address written as one?

#74 - Roskilde Cathedral

The Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It's the first Gothic style church to be made of bricks in Europe.

Roskilde Cathedral has been the main burial site for Danish monarchs since the 15th century. As such, it has been significantly extended and altered over time as individual rulers have added multiple burial chapels.

I received this Portugal multiview from Maria who I've known for a year through postcrossing. This view shows (starting from the top left) the Old University in Coimbra, the canals of Aveiro, the Pena Castle at Sintra and a beach in Algarve.

There are 263 territories and countries in the world according to WorldMapMaker.com.

263 x $5 per postcard = $1315

$1315 divided by $10 per mosquito net = 131.5 or for our purposes...132.

So once the challenge is complete, I will have $1315 donated to Nothing But Nets and purchased 132 nets.

Surprised nobody caught my error in the header! (I'll leave it up for awhile so you can see what I'm talking about).

#71 - Galapagos Islands

Pauline sent me yet another card from her trip to South America, this one from the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.

The islands are famous for being the inspiration of Charles Darwin's "Theory of Evolution". Darwin had travelled to the region as young gradate upon The Beagle; a large ship with orders to to perform hydrological surveys (depth of coastal water, shoreline, etc). Of course, they came to these islands and I guess the light bulb went off for Darwin.

This island chain is home to 100's of different species of mollusks, birds, reptiles and amphibians, making it one of the most important and significant places in the world for biological research.

Unfortunately illegal hunting and fishing in recent years have decreased wildlife populations, putting some species on the endangered list. When will we learn?

#70 - Williamstad Harbour

It is believed this heart-shaped island got it's name from the Portuguese word Coracao, which means heart. Considering the islands ownership changed many times, French...English..Dutch, it makes perfect sense for the island to have a Portuguese name ;)

Speaking of Dutch, many of the buildings and architecture in Curacao combine Spanish and Dutch styles, as you can see here in Williamstad, the capital of the Netherlands Antilles.

#69 - Machu Picchu

My friend Pauline recently went to Peru and judging by her email, had a trip of a lifetime! She sent me this view of Machu Picchu, The Lost City, built by the Incas.

The Incas were a very small group of people; totalling around 100 000. At the height of their time, they ruled nearly 15 million people who belonged to other ethnic tribes and groups. 15. million. people. What! How did the minority end up ruling the majority?.....They must've been brilliant marketers. "Join our kingdom, get 2 free potatoes. Join with a friend, and get 5 free potatoes!"

In the mountains of Peru, you can find Machu Picchu, or The Lost City. It was completely covered in forest and vines until 1911. It is believed that Machu Picchu served as a retreat for Incan rulers and their family. The area is surrounded by high mountain peaks and rushing waters, features that were sacred to the Inca.

Mauritius. Beautiful island, breathtaking beaches and home to do the dodo.
Or at least...it WAS. The Europeans sighted the bird on the island in the 1600's and
it became extinct only 80 years later to do overhunting. Poor dodo...

#67 - Tana Toraja

Veronica sent me this view of Tana Toraja, the traditional highland home of the indigenous Torajan people of Southern Indonesia.

Torajans are renowned for their elaborate funeral rites, burial sites carved into rocky cliffs, massive peaked-roof traditional houses (which you can see here), and colourful wood carvings.

You can check out another view of the homes here. I wonder why they're built off the ground like that....rain? monsoon?

#66 - Ha Long

This UNESCO site is Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. The bay contains thousands, (yes, you read that right) of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes.

There are roughly 1600 people who live in 4 different fishing communities in Ha Long bay, in floating houses.
It's pretty neat, click here to see a picture. Just one question. Where's the washroom? : Hehe!

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love the Dominican Republic. I love the people, the landscape, the climate...I feel so at home and relaxed there. I can't remember how many times I've been there, I've lost count now.

Today I received this cute card of a young boy sitting on a donkey; a common sight in la Republica Dominica.

Tebessa, in Northern Algeria, became part of the Roman Empire in 146 A.C. You can find many ruins which were designed with the classical Roman architectural styles, including the Gate of Caracalla, and remains of the Basilica of St. Crispinus.

In this card, you can see the Temple of Minerva on the very left hand side, and some other unknown ruins. If you know what they are, please let me know!

In the small town of Tiradentes, Brazil, you can find the home of Padre Toledo. He was a priest who supported the Inconfidencia Mineira, the rebellion against Portugal led by Joaquim José da Silva Xavier.

Today, the home of Father Toledo has been converted to a museum to honour the memory of this great political leader.

#61 - The Bran Castle

Deep in the Carpathian Mountains, in the heart of rural Romania is Transylvania, where perched atop a rocky peak, there has been a fortress of some kind for nearly 1,000 years and the fortress that stands here today is now known as Dracula's Castle (the actual Castle Dracula is in ruin on a secluded site near the Arges River).

Bran Castle was originally a stronghold built by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in 1212. At that time it was called Dietrichstein. (Thank goodness they changed they name cuz there's no way I can say..Die..Dietrichstien. Never mind, I just said it!)

As residents changed throughout the years, one has gained significant importance: Vlad Tepes III or "Dracula" which translates to "Son of the Dragon". (Vlad's father was known as The Dragon).

It is believed that Bram Stoker based his character and story Dracula, upon the life of Vlad Tepes III.

was founded nearly 2500 years ago; it was first a Celtic town, later to be

The city of Sisak is located southeast of Zagreb where the rivers of Odra and Kupa,
and Kupa and Sava meet. Its geographical location and natural beauties influenced
the development of the city. Because of this, Sisak became the center of one
of the biggest counties in Croatia.

I first heard of Varadero from my grade 9 and 10 math teacher, Mrs. Graham. She went to Cuba it every year and always told the class about the great beaches, music and people.

And looking at this view, I can certainly understand why she was in love with Varadero.

It's a small town, mostly known for the 20 km of white, sandy beaches. It's a perfect place to relax, de-stress and of course, get a great tan.

For the most part, Varadero was used as a docking station by the Spanish Army Fleet. The earliest mention of Varadero, comes in 1555. However, the area was not developed until 1887.

At this time, ten families obtained permission to build their vacation homes in the Varadero area. And that would be the beginning of this great resort town.

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei, was built in 1958 and named after the 28th sultan of Brunei.

Unlike other mosques, it incoporates traditional Arabic and Italian architectural styles and designs.

Dundurn Castle is located in Hamilton, Ontario and oddly enough, here's a place that I have visited several times!

Hamilton is home to McMaster University which just happens to be the university that I attended.

While I was a student, I made a few visits to Dundurn Castle including one trip for an archaeology class. At the time, they were digging for arrowheads on the property of the Dundurn Castl.e Neat huh?

El Candijelo Street can be found in Cartagena, Colombia. The area was founded originally by Aboriginal peoples, as early as 7000 BC. During the Spanish takeover, the city was surrounded by 11 km of walls.

This is a view from Persepolis, Iran; a World Heritage Site that was constructed around 515 BC. It's name means "The City of Persians".

This is my first postmarked card from Iran and to be honest, normally I would be ecstatic and thrilled about receiving a rare postcard but I can't help but feel sadness and worry over the current political situation in Iran. My concern and worry for the people of Iran, trumps the thrill of getting a rare postcard.

The current situation is a remnder that most of us are extremely lucky to live in peaceful countries, where political strife and turmoil is unheard of.

Keeping Iranians in my thoughts and prayers, especially the family of dear Neda.

Monkeys in Southern Thailand are well known for searching tourist bags for food and stealing hats.

These tricksters also play an important role in Thai culture due to the Indian epic, The Ramayana. One of the key characters is Hanuman, the "monkey God" who saves Sita, a woman who was kidnapped by demons. Like India, monkeys are allowed to roam free due to the significance of Hanuman.

Here's a fantastic multiview of the capital of Grenada, St. George.

Grenada is located north-east of Venezuela and it was first discovered in 1498 when the British tried to conquer the island.

To assert their power and presence, the British placed red telephone booths all around the country. Well, the British never managed to conquer Grenada; the French did that in the 1650's.
And the first thing they did, was paint all the red phone booths to pink.

The postcard says Maienfeld but in reality, it's the village of Heidi. Do you know Heidi?

She's a character in the book series, Heidi, written by Johanna Spyri. She lives in the Swiss mountains, yodels, and eats lots of good yummy chocolate and gets many cavities. ;)

Must be tough to live in Maienfeld, waking up to that gorgeous view...every..single....day. Well, I guess someone has to do it right? Thanks Jutta!

June 20 - World Refugee Day

Today is World Refugee Day; a day to bring awareness to the millions of people who are forced to flee their homes due to political strife, natural disasters or ethnic tensions. Many refugees in Africa are forced to live in camps; the stay can be for a few weeks, a few months, or even, a few years.

Mosquitoes are drawn to these camps; the living conditions are ideal for the pesky bugs to spread the virus. In turn, refugees have a very high probability of acquiring malaria and thus, it comes as no surprise that malaria is the number one killer of refugees in Africa. It kills about half a billion people annually; that's half the people in India, or China...

Economically, the cost of treating and caring for malaria patients, costs the African government about $12 billion a year.

But here's the good news. Malaria can be prevented with the use of mosquito bed nets. With education, and the use of this simple net, families can be saved.

For example, in 2006, malaria caused 33% of all illness in refugee camps in Kenya. Now it accounts for just 8%. A very significant drop and clearly, we can definitely reduce this to 0%.
And that is why it's important to keep working at the issue; we can't stop now when the goal is within our reach.

Here's a view from Northern Spain, highlighting the rugged coast of Mouro Island. This flat and rocky island can be found in the Bay of Santander.

In the background, you can faintly see the Mouro Island lighthouse. Built in 1860, this lighthouse is still operational and flashes 3 white lights every 21 seconds...not every 20 seconds, but every 21 seconds. Who thought of that bright idea? Hope it wasn't you Mario!

The Tatry Mountains are situated along Poland's border with Slovakia. They're actually the highest mountain range in the Carpathian mountains.

If I got a $1 for every time I received this postcard, I would have....$5. (I even went through my collection to check). Not that I'm complaining Rita, I love vies of Tallinn :)

The Old Town of Tallinn seems to be a very popular view from Estonia and it should be. It's a UNESCO site featuring an Old Town Hall that has remained in tact since 1404. It is the last Gothic Town Hall in all of Northern Europe.

Pretty impressive I say.

#44 - Taal Volcano

Annette sent me this card with a little bump in the middle of the water. It looks like a small hill but in fact, it's Taal Volcano in the Philippines. It's known as the smallest volcano in the world, it's height coming in at 400 m/1312 feet.

To give you some idea of how small it is, the tallest tower, the Burj Dubai, measures 818 m.

But don't let it's size fool you. Although unactive since 1977, the volcano is estimated to be responsible for the deaths of 5000 - 6000 people.

This tiny, itty bitty island is located between Australia and New Zealand. In fact, the total area of Norfolk Island is 34.6 km^2.

One of the distinguishing tree species on the island is the Norfolk Island Pine which you can see in this card quite clearly. It's even on the their flag...

It's quite common to see rose, tulip and sunflower gardens in North America but this orchid garden in Singapore is like heaven for a gardener like myself.

Three years ago, my friend gave me an orchid plant for my birthday. It was so beautiful...but it died in a few months. I had a hard time getting more blooms and getting the plant to succeed.

That's alright. I'll enjoy the orchids in this card from Sheree :)

#41 - The Old Town of Kaunas

I used to have a penpal fro Lithuania when I was 15 years old so I'm very familiar with this country, including the city of Kaunas. It is the second largest city in Lithuania, and as you can see here, it has many old and historic buildings.

That's because the city was founded around 1030 AD, making it just under 1000 years old.

How does a city celebrate it's 1000 year anniversary anyway? I mean, if your city is turning 1000? That party better be amazing. I mean, forget fireworks and cake. That party has to be the best thing the city has seen...in a 1000 years.

There needs to be like 90 Amazonian parrots singing the Lithuanian anthem, and 100 elephants doing the macarena to make that party memorable.

Am I right? or Am I right? Cake and fireworks just won't do! Thanks to Mojne!

I'm convinced that I must have some good karma because the cards that I'm receiving are unbelievable. I received another awesome card from Yuri in Israel, showing the wonderful ship of the desert, the camel.

I rode a camel in India when I was 7 years old. It was a fun experience and hopefully I'll get to ride one again, maybe this time in Israel :)

I love being near the water, whether it's lake, sea or ocean. There's a connection that I feel with the earth, watching the waves come in, knowing that there is something bigger than me...it makes me feel quite humble...and grateful to be able to witness it all.

Check out these beautiful sunsets from Belgium's North Coast. There's nothing more beautiful than a sunset; the hue and range of colours is another piece of artwork created by Mother Earth.

I usually watch my sunset from my kitchen, my while washing dishes or tidying up the kitchen. I would take a picture, except these houses blocking my view. That's the beauty of living in a suburb.

To the right, I believe is the house of Domenico Columbus, father of you-know-who.

During the French Revolution, the Italians imported the guillotine. It was utilized

How sweet is Jo? She was travelling and on vacation in Cambodia when she sent me this map card.

The map shows various towns and sites across the country, including one of Cambodia's most famed buildings, Angkor Vat.

And to the south-east within the Vietnamese border, you will find the Tri-Vietnam Giants. It is said that you must either donate rice or wood to the giants before allowing entry in their country.

#30 - Camellia Garden

My favorite Japanese thing right now, is chicken katsu. I could eat chicken katsu in the morning, I could eat chicken katsu at night and I could eat chicken katsu at Mt.Fuji which you can see here in this card (the white mountain top, right side).

The red flowers you see are camellia's, specifically camellia japonica which is native to Japan. Some estimate there are over 2000 varities of this flower in Japan.

#31 - Stone Bridge, Skopje

Another panoramic view; I'm definitely getting spoiled here! This one is from
Skopje, Republic of Macdeonia. The centre of the card shows the Stone Bridge
over the river Vardar. As its name implies, the bridge was made with large stone
slabs, as early as the 14th century. Check out this vintage postcard of the same
bridge from 1909. Pretty cool right?

Oh I know the stereotypes, but when you think of Jamaica, you can't help but to think of dreadlocks, some good reggae tunes and diving off a cliff into the ocean.

I'm not joking! Rick's Cafe has become one of the best places in Negril to catch a sunset. It's built upon a cliff and many tourists gather here in the evenings. The cafe is surrounded by cliffs and it's become something of a hotspot for divers.

Coffee, cake, diving and a sunset. Sounds like a pretty good day to me!

Although I was born in Canada, my parents are actually from India, which I
affectionately call the "mother land". I've been to India twice and the last trip was
in 1993. Needless to say, I'm dying to go back and visit my family. It's been way too long!

Seeta from Mumbai, and I have been trading for years it seems. She sent me this
stunning view of Ladakh which is in the North. If this doesn't make you
want to visit India, I don't know what will. Breathtaking isn't it?

attracts alot of tourists. I was lucky to get this panoramic card from Ersi, who

has 3 cats. I've got one and he's more than enough to handle!

a good book, and have some hot chocolate?

#26 - Lijiang Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Fay tells me this mountain has never been climbed by humans due to it's unique geographical situation.

And I'm here to give you more insight about that. Look closely at the green part of field. You might not see it clearly, but there's a golf course at the foot of the mountain.

Clearly, the golf course is the distraction. "Should I scale this mountain...or try to be the next Tiger Woods?"......Hmmmmm.

Here's a view from Fraser Island; this UNESCO site is the largest sand island in the world. It is in fact, the only sand island in the world to have a tropical rainforest.

#24 - Voskresensky Gate

When I started this project, the main goal was to get people aware of malaria and the issue in Africa. I just came up with it one night in hopes that people would take interest.

Even more touching are the heartfelt wishes I'm receiving for my birthday; people really are sincere and thoughtful in what they write. For the most part, these wishes and cards are coming from total strangers. People who have simply agreed to send a card, because of the challenge.

I feel better knowing the world is full of caring people, who do what they can to help.

The media, the tv, and newspapers, share stories that deplete your hope and faith in the world. If only they took a moment to see the truth, that there are good people everywhere. All it takes is for us to open our eyes.

Needless to say, I'm overwhelmed. The cards keep pouring in and I never thought the idea would be as successful as it is. Thanks to all of you for making this birthday and cause extra special :)

#22 - St. Michaels Church, Hildesheim

At first, I thought this card from Fabi was a castle or maybe fort. It's actually St. Michaels church in Hildesheim, Germany. It's also a UNESCO site, which was destroyed during World War II; I think that's why you can see different tones and shades of colour on the exterior.

But most impressive? The church was constructed between 1001 and 1031.

Amazing. We don't have anything that old in Canada except the glaciers and lakes.

If you look closely, you can see old cars and old lamposts on the street. There's a guy on a bicycle too!
